Discover Dordrecht’s historic city centre through the story of genever and Dutch drinking culture. Together with a guide, you walk along characteristic streets, harbours and historic trading houses while hearing stories about commerce, craftsmanship and the distilling of spirits. You can choose a 1.5-hour historical Genever Tour or an extended version that combines the walk with a tasting at a specialised genever shop in the historic city centre.
Genever as a Dutch tradition
Genever is one of the best-known traditional Dutch spirits and has a long history of craftsmanship, trade and distilling. During the walk, your guide explains how genever developed, the role of malt wine, herbs and juniper berries, and how the drink changed over the centuries. The relationship between genever and gin is also discussed, but from the perspective of the Dutch genever tradition.
Historical Genever Tour or tour with tasting
The 1.5-hour Historical Genever Tour focuses on the stories surrounding genever, distilling and Dutch drinking culture, combined with the history of Dordrecht. Those who would also like to taste this tradition can choose the approximately two-hour version with a tasting. During or after the walk, you visit a specialised genever shop in the historic city centre, where several different genevers can be sampled. The exact tasting programme can be adapted to the preferences of the group.
